WDCO is pleased to publicise a programme in which Berkeley Homes, in partnership with The People’s Company, is offering 10 Woodberry Down residents the opportunity to train as Heritage Volunteers. WDCO supports the initiative and encourages anyone with an interest in the history of the estate to consider taking part.

The training is free and will be led by heritage specialist John Whelan, Director of The People’s Company. Once trained, the volunteers will go on to uncover the history, people and stories that have shaped Woodberry Down.

Who it is for

The programme is open to Woodberry Down residents aged 18 or over. No prior experience is needed, only an interest in storytelling, history and the estate. Places are allocated on a first come, first served basis, so there is something to be said for registering early.

What it involves

Participants should be available between January 2027 and October 2027, a commitment of approximately 20 days across the 10 months. They receive training first and then take part in the heritage work itself. The training does not lead to a formal qualification, but it prepares participants to act as trained heritage volunteers.

The venue and session dates are still to be confirmed by the organisers. Questions about those, or about access and support needs, are best put to them directly.

How to register interest

Please register your interest by Friday 11 December 2026, by email to either of the following:

  • John Whelan, The People’s Company: whelanjohnwalworth@gmail.com
  • Rosaline Defor, Berkeley Homes: roseline.fiatuse@berkeleygroup.co.uk

An earlier heritage project

This is not the first heritage project on the estate. In January WDCO published images of the history panels beside The Naturalist at the top of Spring Park, which Berkeley Homes had provided to us. They can be seen in The birth of a dream. That project was supported by Eastside Community Heritage, Notting Hill Genesis, the Manor House Development Trust, the London Borough of Hackney and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Who is behind it

The programme is offered by Berkeley Homes in partnership with The People’s Company. It may also be of interest to subscribers to Harringay Online who live on the estate.

If you know a Woodberry Down resident who might want to take part, please pass the details on, including through residents’ WhatsApp groups.
